You’ll learn about traditional crafts, such as log house building, forging and needle binding. We’ll make tools, sew and carve wood. The lessons will take place in unique workshops. We’ll make two study trips, one in the Nordic region and the other in Europe.
The Lessons
We have lessons at both Sund Folk High School and in Stiklestad, where most of the lessons will take place in the longhouse and the different workshops of the medieval courtyard Stiklastadir, which is a part of Stiklestad National Cultural Center.
We’ll go out in the forest, make fire in old-fashioned ways and learn to find materials we can transform into practical objects. We’ll learn to make our own tools we can use in the different crafts. We’ll test medieval textile techniques, such as using plants to colour yarn. You’ll get a comprehensive introduction to traditional crafts, medieval culture and natural resources through a hands-on approach.
Broad Competence
The first semester you’ll get to try different techniques and materials. The second semester you’ll get the chance to study in depth the subjects you find most interesting. The teachers have expertise in different craft skills, such as textile and leatherwork, carpentry, forging and woodwork. We put what we learn into practise.
